Senior Photos in Southwest Florida: Location Ideas, Outfits & Making Your Session All About You

Senior year is such a big deal. Somehow, the little kid you were photographing for years is suddenly getting ready to graduate, and now it's time for senior pictures! As a Southwest Florida photographer, senior photography is one of my favorite types of portrait sessions because every senior is completely different. There isn't one “right” way to do senior photos, and I don't think your senior portraits should look exactly like everyone else's.

One of the best things about living in Southwest Florida is that we have SO many options when it comes to locations. We have beaches, palm trees, water, parks, trails, greenery, downtown areas, bridges, architecture, fields and plenty of places that give us completely different looks without having to travel very far. That's one of the reasons I love being a Fort Myers senior photographer and Cape Coral senior photographer. We can build a session around your personality instead of trying to make you fit into a certain location.

Of course, beach senior portraits are always a favorite here. We have some absolutely beautiful beaches in the Fort Myers area, and there's nothing quite like a senior portrait session with the Gulf of Mexico, soft sand and a Southwest Florida sunset in the background. But the beach isn't your only option! If you're more of an outdoorsy person, we can find a location with trees, trails, ivy walls, gardens, tall grasses, greenery, and more. If you like a more urban look, downtown Fort Myers can give us architecture, sidewalks, brick, storefronts, murals and a completely different feel. There are also beautiful parks and nature locations around Cape Coral and Fort Myers that give us a mixture of greenery and water. Local photo guides even highlight places like Four Mile Cove and Lakes Park for their combination of natural scenery, water and walkable areas.

And here's something I love to do for senior photography: we don't always have to choose just one location.

Sometimes two locations can make a senior session feel like two completely different shoots. We might start somewhere with greenery and a more natural look, then head to the beach for sunset. Or we could start downtown for an urban look and then finish somewhere with water. If you have a few different sides to your personality, why not show them?

Your senior photos should show more than what you looked like at 17 or 18. They should show a little bit of who you were.

That's also why I always encourage seniors to bring more than one outfit. I recommend planning for about 2–3 outfits, depending on the length and style of your session. You might want one outfit that feels more dressed up, one that is casual and completely “you,” and another that shows off a different style. For example, maybe you have a beautiful dress or suit you've been dying to wear, a favorite pair of jeans and sneakers, and then a third outfit that is a little more trendy or fun.

Don't forget the accessories, either! Hats, jewelry, sunglasses, jackets, boots, sneakers, a favorite bag, a guitar strap, a letterman jacket, or even a special piece of jewelry can completely change the look of an image. You don't need to bring your entire closet, but having a few options gives us a lot more variety.

And please don't think your senior session has to be all serious poses and perfect smiles. Some of my favorite senior pictures are the ones where we are actually doing something. If you play guitar, bring your guitar. If you're a baseball player, bring your glove. If you dance, bring your dance shoes. If you're into cars, sports, art, music, fishing, cheerleading, volleyball, football, horseback riding, gaming, books, photography, or basically anything else that is important to you, bring it!

Even something as simple as your favorite pair of sneakers, your varsity jacket, your class ring or a hobby-related item can make the session feel more personal.

I've photographed all kinds of sessions over the years, and one of the things I've learned is that the best portraits happen when we aren't trying to make someone look like somebody they're not. I want your senior photos to look like you.

That might mean a gorgeous dress on the beach at sunset. It might mean jeans and a favorite T-shirt walking through downtown Fort Myers. It might mean a football jersey on the field. It might mean sitting under a big tree with a book. It might mean bringing your car, your dog, your instrument, your sports equipment or something else that tells your story.

There really isn't a formula.

And if you're a parent planning senior pictures and thinking, “I have absolutely no idea what location, outfits or poses my teenager is going to want,” don't worry. 😂 That's part of what I'm here for! We can talk about what your senior likes, what they want their photos to feel like, and what locations will work best. I'll help you put the pieces together so you don't have to show up with a Pinterest board and hope for the best.

We can also plan the session around the time of day. Southwest Florida gives us beautiful natural light, especially around golden hour, which can be incredible for beach senior photos. Depending on the location and the look we're going for, we can use different light and backgrounds to create images that feel bright and colorful, soft and romantic, dramatic, fun or editorial.

And let's not forget the cap and gown! While senior portraits are usually taken before graduation, adding a few graduation photos to your session is a great way to finish everything off. Your cap, gown, tassel, diploma, class ring or even a college shirt can be incorporated into a few images. These can be especially fun for graduation announcements, graduation parties, thank-you cards and keepsakes.

I want it to be fun. I want you to feel comfortable. And I want you to walk away with a gallery that feels like a collection of images you will still love years from now.

Because senior year goes by incredibly fast.

One minute you're picking out your first day of school outfit, and the next you're ordering your cap and gown and talking about college, careers and what comes next. Senior pictures are one of those things that freeze this particular moment in time before everything changes.
