Top Things to Do in Southwest Florida This August, September & October 2026

Living in Southwest Florida means there is always something to do — even when the summer heat is trying its best to convince you to stay inside!

As a Cape Coral native and local photographer who has been in business for 11 years, I've spent a LOT of time exploring Southwest Florida. From Cape Coral and Fort Myers to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Naples, and everywhere in between, there are so many places to explore, eat, photograph, and make memories.

August, September, and October are an interesting time of year here. August and September are still very much Florida summer, but October starts bringing those first hints of fall, cooler evenings, Halloween events, festivals, live music, and outdoor activities.

So if you're wondering what to do in Southwest Florida this August, September, or October, I've put together some of my favorite ideas!

🌴 AUGUST IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

August is HOT.

There's really no way around that.

But don't let the heat keep you from enjoying Southwest Florida! This is actually a great time to enjoy the beach early in the morning, get out on the water, visit local attractions, catch a sunset, or take advantage of some of the area's indoor activities.

🏖️ Hit the Beach — Early!

August is a great month for a Fort Myers Beach day, especially if you get there earlier in the morning.

Head out before the hottest part of the day, enjoy the soft white sand and beautiful Gulf water, and then grab lunch somewhere nearby.

If you're staying in Cape Coral or Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, and Bonita Springs are all great options for a beach day.

And if you happen to be looking for a Fort Myers Beach photographer, morning can also be an absolutely beautiful time for family portraits!

The light is softer, the beaches are generally quieter, and you don't have to wait until sunset to get gorgeous photographs.

🎨 Check Out Local Art

Southwest Florida has a surprisingly great local art scene.

The Cape Coral Art Center has exhibitions and events throughout the year, including The Symphony of Sound and Shape, which runs August 7 through September 24, 2026.

It's a great option when you want something different from another day at the beach.

🌅 Chase a Southwest Florida Sunset

This one is always on my list.

You don't need an expensive attraction or a reservation to enjoy one of the best things Southwest Florida has to offer.

Find a beach.

Bring a chair.

Grab an ice cream.

And watch the sun go down.

Some of my favorite photographs I've ever taken have happened during those last few minutes of daylight.

And as a Southwest Florida photographer, I can tell you that our sunsets are one of the biggest reasons people fall in love with this area.

🐊 Get Out on the Water

August is a great time to explore Southwest Florida by water.

Try:

• Kayaking

• Paddleboarding

• Dolphin tours

• Boat rides

• Fishing

• Sunset cruises

• Manatee spotting

• Airboat adventures

Just remember to keep an eye on the weather. Florida summer storms can appear FAST!

🎶 SEPTEMBER IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

September is when things start getting interesting.

The summer crowds have thinned out, but we're not quite into our busy winter season yet.

And one of the biggest events of the month is something you definitely don't want to miss.

🎸 Island Hopper Songwriter Fest

September 18–27, 2026

If you've never experienced Island Hopper, put this one on your calendar.

The Island Hopper Songwriter Fest brings more than 60 singer-songwriters to Southwest Florida for 10 days of live music.

And it's not all in one location.

That's what makes it so fun.

The festival moves throughout:

📍 Captiva Island📍 Cape Coral📍 Downtown Fort Myers📍 Fort Myers Beach

The 2026 festival includes more than 60 performances, with many of them free.

Some of the 2026 featured artists include Edwin McCain, Alexandra Kay, LOCASH, and Michael Ray.

There are also special ticketed experiences, including songwriter dinners and sunset cruises.

If you love live music, this is one of the best things to do in Fort Myers and Cape Coral in September.

🍽️ Take Advantage of Restaurant Specials

September is also a great time to explore local restaurants.

It's still hot outside, but the slower season can be a great opportunity to try somewhere new without dealing with the winter crowds.

Make a list of restaurants you've been meaning to try and turn it into your own Southwest Florida food tour.

Cape Coral alone has enough restaurants to keep you busy for quite a while!

🌴 Explore Sanibel & Captiva

September is a great time for a slower-paced island day.

Explore the beaches, look for shells, grab lunch, walk around, and enjoy the tropical scenery.

And if you're visiting from out of town, don't feel like you have to cram everything into one day.

Sometimes the best Southwest Florida vacations are the ones where you don't have much of a schedule at all.

🎃 OCTOBER IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Okay.

This is when things start getting fun.

October is one of my favorite months in Southwest Florida because we finally start getting those little hints of fall.

No, we're not going to be wearing sweaters on the beach.

But the humidity starts backing off, evenings become more comfortable, and suddenly everyone starts wanting to be outside again.

And then there's Halloween.

🎃 Halloween Events & Haunted Attractions

October brings Halloween events all over Southwest Florida.

You'll find:

The Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium has historically hosted its Haunted Walk in October, making it one to keep an eye on when planning your Halloween season.

If you're looking for something kid-friendly, keep an eye on local city calendars, libraries, schools, churches, and community organizations as October gets closer.

🍺 Cape Coral Oktoberfest

One of the big fall traditions in Cape Coral is Oktoberfest.

If you've never been, this is one of those events that reminds you that Southwest Florida isn't just beaches and palm trees.

Expect German food, music, dancing, vendors, and plenty of people getting into the spirit of the season.

It's a great fall event for adults, families, and anyone looking for something different to do in Cape Coral.

🎨 Visit Downtown Fort Myers

Downtown Fort Myers is always worth a visit, but fall is especially nice because you can actually enjoy being outside without immediately feeling like you're melting.

Check out the River District, local shops, restaurants, galleries, and the area's recurring art and music events.

The monthly Fort Myers Art Walk is another great option for an evening downtown, with local and regional artists displaying their work.

🌊 Take Advantage of the Beach Before Season Gets Busy

Here's my biggest October recommendation:

Go to the beach.

Seriously.

Before our winter visitors arrive in full force, October is a great time to enjoy Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Beach, and the surrounding coastline.

Take a beach walk.

Go shelling.

Watch the sunset.

Have dinner by the water.

Or just sit in the sand and do absolutely nothing.

That's allowed too.

📸 October Is Also a Great Time for Family Photos

And, of course, I have to mention this one.

October is when I start getting a LOT more excited about outdoor photography.

The weather becomes more comfortable, families are getting back into their routines, and we're heading straight into the busiest photography season of the year.

There is SO much to do in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Springs, Naples, and throughout Southwest Florida.
