Summer Is Coming to an End… Which Means Halloween Is Almost Here! 🎃

I know, I know… Halloween already?! We just got through Fourth of July! But here we are, somehow already in August, the kids are heading back to school, summer is slowly winding down, and before we know it, the stores will be filled with pumpkins, Halloween decorations, costumes and candy. And honestly? I'm completely okay with it. 😂

I absolutely LOVE Halloween. Always have. There is just something about this time of year that is so much fun. I love the decorations, the costumes, the pumpkins, the spooky movies, the candy, the creepy little details and, of course, getting to be creative with Halloween photography!

As a photographer in Southwest Florida, I get to photograph so many different types of sessions throughout the year, but Halloween photo sessions are definitely some of the most fun. There is just something about Halloween that gives you permission to get a little crazy and creative. We aren't limited to making everything perfectly traditional or perfectly posed. We can create something spooky, silly, magical, creepy, adorable, dramatic, or completely over-the-top.

I've done so many fun Halloween sessions over the years, and some of my favorite setups have been the ones where we really get to create a whole little world around the child. Give me pumpkins, cobwebs, bats, creepy trees, Halloween props, costumes, spooky lighting, candy, witches, ghosts or little monsters and I'm happy! 😂

And there are SO many possibilities for Halloween photo sessions. We could do a classic pumpkin setup with pumpkins everywhere and a beautiful fall-inspired backdrop. We could create a little witch's kitchen with a cauldron, potion bottles, spell books and all sorts of magical details. We could do a not-so-scary haunted house for the little ones, a creepy spiderweb setup for kids who love all things spooky, or even a Halloween candy shop filled with colorful treats.

I also think it would be so much fun to create something completely different for older kids and teens. Halloween photography doesn't always have to be bright orange pumpkins and cartoon ghosts. We could go darker and more dramatic with black, deep orange, moody lighting, shadows, pumpkins and a more cinematic feel. There are so many ways to make a Halloween session unique to the person being photographed.

And then, of course, there are the COSTUMES!

One of my favorite things about Halloween photography is getting to photograph kids in the costumes they've been so excited about all year. Because let's be honest, kids put a LOT of thought into what they're going to be for Halloween. Then they wear the costume for a few hours, eat an impressive amount of candy, and somehow the costume ends up stuffed in a closet until next year. 😂 Why not document it with professional photos?

And you definitely don't have to wait until October 31st for your Halloween photos. In fact, October 31st is probably one of the busiest days of the year for families! Everyone is getting dressed, going to parties, handing out candy, taking the kids trick-or-treating and trying to keep track of all the candy that somehow multiplies throughout the night. 😂 Scheduling your Halloween photography session earlier in October means you get all the fun without all the chaos.

You can even use your Halloween photos for Halloween cards, decorations, social media, or just to have as a fun memory of that particular year. Years from now, you'll remember exactly what your child wanted to be, how little they were, and how excited they were about Halloween.

As much as I love summer, I have to admit that this little transition into fall is exciting. The kids are back in school, the holidays are getting closer, and Halloween is right around the corner.
