There's nothing quite like a beach session. The salty air, the sound of the waves, glowing sunsets, and endless natural beauty create the perfect setting for family photos. After photographing countless families on Southwest Florida beaches, I've learned that the best sessions happen when everyone arrives relaxed and ready to enjoy themselves.
Here are my favorite tips to help you get the most out of your beach photography session.
1. Trust the Sunset Time
I know it feels late, especially for little ones, but there's a reason photographers schedule beach sessions close to sunset. This timing provides soft, flattering light that simply can't be recreated earlier in the day. It's worth staying up a little past bedtime for photos you'll treasure forever.

2. Dress for the Beach
Choose light, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, chiffon, or gauze. Neutral colors such as cream, beige, white, soft blues, sage green, dusty pink, and light tan photograph beautifully against the sand and water.
Try to avoid:
Neon colors
Large logos
Busy patterns
Matching everyone exactly
Instead, coordinate colors so everyone complements one another.
3. Leave the Stress at Home
Parents often worry that their child won't smile or won't cooperate.
Here's a little secret...
Some of the best photographs happen when kids aren't looking at the camera.
Running, collecting shells, splashing in the water, giving Mom a hug, or holding Dad's hand often creates the most meaningful images. I expect kids to be kids, and I build my sessions around that.
4. Plan for Bare Feet
The beach is one of the few places where no shoes actually look better.

Bare feet create a relaxed, natural look and eliminate the hassle of carrying sandals through the sand.
5. Bring the Essentials
A few helpful items can make your session even smoother:
A towel
Baby wipes
A brush or comb
Water bottles
Snacks for little ones
A change of clothes for the drive home
If your kids decide to splash in the waves (and I hope they do!), you'll be glad you packed extras.
6. Let the Kids Get a Little Sandy
Some parents spend the entire session trying to keep everyone perfectly clean.

Don't.
Sand washes off. Childhood doesn't last forever.
Some of the sweetest moments happen when little hands are covered in sand, dresses catch the ocean breeze, and everyone is simply enjoying the moment.
7. Expect to Move
My sessions are designed to feel natural.
We'll walk along the shoreline, cuddle, laugh, play games, toss little ones into the air, and maybe even chase a few waves.

Movement creates genuine emotion, and genuine emotion creates beautiful photographs.
8. Trust Your Photographer
You don't have to worry about posing.
I'll guide you every step of the way while still leaving plenty of room for authentic moments to happen naturally.
Some of my clients tell me afterward that it felt more like a family outing than a photo session—and that's exactly what I hope for.
9. Stay for the Entire Session
Many families think we're done once the sun starts dipping below the horizon.
Actually, some of my favorite images happen in the final ten minutes.

The sky often explodes with soft pinks, oranges, purples, and blues that create a dreamy backdrop you simply can't predict.
10. Focus on Making Memories
At the end of the day, these photographs aren't really about perfect outfits or perfect smiles.
They're about freezing a season of life.
The way your toddler reached for your hand.
The way your daughter wrapped her arms around your neck.
The way your son laughed when the waves surprised him.
Years from now, those little moments become priceless.
A beach session isn't just about creating beautiful photographs—it's about creating an experience your family will remember long after the footprints in the sand have washed away.
